WHY A SUPPORT GROUP?
Support groups information taken in part from a Mayo Clinic article.

Support groups bring together people facing similar issues, whether that's illness, relationship problems or major life changes. Members of support groups often share experiences and advice. It can be helpful just getting to talk with other people who have or are facing similiar circumstances.

A support group can help you cope and feel less isolated as you make connections with others facing similar challenges. A support group shouldn't replace your traditional medical care or counseling if needed, but it can be a helpful resource.

UNDERSTANDING SUPPORT GROUPS

A support group is a gathering of people who share a common concern or interest. A support group usually focuses on a specific situation or condition, such as a health issue, addictions, loss of a loved one etc.

Support groups may be formed by a person or persons who have gone through a situation or possible tragedy where they think they may be able to help others cope while in a similiar circumstance.

Benefits of support groups

Regardless of what type of support group you are looking for, you will find people working through circumstances similar to yours. Members of a support group typically share their personal experiences and offer one another emotional comfort and support. They may also offer practical advice and tips to help you cope with your situation based on how they may have worked through their circumstance.

Benefits of participating in support groups may include:

  • Feeling less lonely, isolated or judged

  • Improved coping skills and adjustment

  • An opportunity to talk openly and honestly about your feelings

  • Reduce stress, depression or anxiety

  • A clearer understanding of what to expect with your situation

  • Learning about new research regarding the issues you are facing

  • Comfort in knowing you are not alone and others may feel the same as you
